Onne van der Wal Photography Workshops and Lectures

Have you ever wondered how Onne van der Wal gets his amazing photos? What technical tricks does he employ to shoot with great results in the challenging marine environment? What is his digital workflow and how does he convert his raw files? In the summer of 2009, Onne answered the long time requests of his followers and began offering Photo Workshops to give insight into his photography. We have had great success with 4 years of “Workshops on the Water” held over the summers since 2009. These unique workshops bring shutter bugs and working pros out on the water to shoot lighthouses boats and coastal scenes of Narragansett Bay from aboard a beautifully restored lobster boat, The M/V Gansett. Onne's workshops put shooters right in the action and have opened the door for other workshops like it and more with a different spin. In January of 2010 for the first time we took 4 eager photographers with us to Culebra, PR for a Workshop on the [Warm] Water, again from aboard a boat as we cruised the Spanish Virgin Islands. we hope to do more workshops like this in the future. We are also pleased that CANON has jumped in and is doing 2 workshops with Onne in late summer 2012 - with an Americas's Cup Workshop and Lecture series in San Francisco timed to coincide with their America's Cup World Series. Canon Live Learning is offering another Newport workshop - part on the water as with our own Workshops on the Water (and again on the M/V Gansett), and part in the classroom learning about post processing, raw conversion, lighting, technique, workflow and printing! Learn more about these NEW CANON sponsored workshops in the links below.

We are excited to announce our 2014 Workshop on the Water dates AND our Tropical Workshop in the Bahamas (See Bahamas info below)!

Summer Workshops on the Water  (2 dates so far, looking to add a third date) take place in Newport shooting the beautiful harbor, Narragansett Bay and a specific event like the Classic Yacht Regatta. Now in their sixth season, these popular workshops offer a great day on the water with Onne in a small group setting, with the ability to shoot with his Canon lenses and hours of personal attention and help from Onne as you use your own equipment. Held aboard the MV "Gansett" (www.gansettcruises.com) with ample room for 15 photographers and a few "riders" who want to spend the day on the Bay with us NOT shooting, the Gansett continues to provide the perfect platform for our workshops. We serve lobster rolls, beer, wine & beverages and snacks too. The best compliment we get about these workshops is that most of the students return for more year after year!

The January 2010 "Workshop on the Water" in Culebra, PR and the Spanish Virgin Islands was a great success!

We held 2 summer "Workshops on the Water" during the summer of 2010. Both were held aboard the perfectly suited motor boat, Gansett. Our first workshop was during the Classic Yacht Regatta in Narragansett Bay. 15 photographers joined us and had front row seats for a perfect day of sun and wind!! (25 knots+). We hope to offer this workshop again next summer as it was deemed a great success.

Our second workshop was a beautiful afternoon and evening session in and around Newport and Narragansett Bay, shooting Shields Racing & Women's Match Racing Worlds, lighthouses, cruise ships and the Nantucket Lightship and a beautiful sunset over Newport Harbor.

Thanks to all our workshop attendees...many of which were aboard Gansett with use for a second and third time doing the workshop!

We will update this page with upcoming lectures or slide shows that are open to the public.
